Carmen Burgos Dannug-Basug

Carmen Burgos Dannug Basug, 93, of Uniontown, OH passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by loved ones on April 19, 2022. 

She was born in the Philippines to Faustino and Margarita Dannug. She is survived by her daughter Carmencita (Mark) Slabinski and three granddaughters, Victoria, Elizabeth, and Christina Slabinski, all from Uniontown, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Felix Basug, her parents Faustino and Margarita, her brothers Leon, Cipriano Sr, Crispin, Santiago, and Emilio, and sisters Bienvenida, Joaquina, Isabel, and Maria. 

Carmen graduated from Ilocos Norte High School in 1948 (she had a delayed start due to WWII) and received her Associates in Arts/Pre-med degree from the University of the Philippines, Manila, Philippines in 1950. She graduated with her Medical Degree in 1955 from the University of Santo Thomas, Manila, Philippines. Carmen completed her internship at Morristown Memorial Hospital in New Jersey and residency at Fairview General Hospital and Cleveland Metro General Hospital in Ohio. She also did additional residency training at Detroit Receiving Hospital in Michigan. Her medical specialty was Internal Medicine with a subspecialty in Cardiology. 

After her training was completed, she returned to the Philippines to care for her ailing father. While in the Philippines, she had an Internal Medicine practice in Quezon City and taught at Manila Central University College of Medicine. She returned to the US in 1967 and worked at Highland View Hospital followed by Metro Health Skilled Nursing Facility (Sunny Acres). She also served as a faculty senior instructor of Case Western Reserve University College of Medicine and was awarded the 50 Year Award (in medicine) from the Academy of Medicine of Cleveland/Northern Ohio Medical Association. 

Carmen was a devout Catholic and a charter member of the Church of the Resurrection in Solon, OH. She served as a Eucharistic minister, greeter, and member of the parish council. She believed all things are possible if you believe in and love God. Along with her deceased husband, Felix, they established the Basug Medical Career Scholarship as a way to give back to the community. There have been 59 recipients since it’s inception in 1982. In appreciation of her medical education, Carmen donated a Medical Library Trust Fund to the University of Santo Thomas. Carmen cherished her Filipino heritage and was a lifetime member of PASO (Philippine American Society of Ohio) and APPO (Association of Philippine Physicians in Ohio). Wanting to help those in her homeland, she contributed annually to the APPO medical mission trips for the Philippines.

Carmen’s special interests included cooking, reading, traveling around the world, and educating people on financial matters. She especially loved spending time and attending all the major events of her granddaughters while also imparting her values, words of wisdom, life lessons, and love of God. She will be greatly missed by her family.

Friends and family will be received Friday, April 29th from 4 to 8PM at Hopkins Lawyer Funeral Home, 3553 Northdale Street NW, Uniontown, Ohio 44685 (one block NW of the square of 619 & Cleveland Ave). Funeral mass will be Saturday, April 30th, 10:30AM at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 2952 Edison Street NW, Uniontown, Ohio 44685 with the Reverend John Zapp presiding. Burial will follow at Sunset Hills Memory Gardens in North Canton.
