Charles Wayman “Wayne” Hammitt, age 95, passed away on Saturday, August 7, 2021, at his home in Mogadore, Ohio with his devoted daughter, Cheryl (Hammitt) Murphy, by his side.
Wayne was born in Akron, Ohio in 1926 and graduated from the Goodyear Industrial University High School and Kent State University. He proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II and was stationed in the Marshall Islands. Wayne spent his entire career working as an engineer at The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company.
Wayne served his community as an active member of the Mogadore Lions Club, Mogadore Christian Church and Kent State Blue and Gold Club and Alumni Association. He regularly Attended Kent State University sporting events and opened his home to Kent State athletes. As a resident of Mogadore, most of his life, Wayne was an avid and proud supporter of the Mogadore Wildcat High School football teams and his grandson, Coach Cat. He also enjoyed golfing in many Mogadore and Kent leagues as well as traveling and entertaining friends and family with his lifelong love, Carolyn, who preceded him in death after 68 years of marriage. Wayne made many longtime friends through his community service and activities.
In addition to his wife, Carolyn (Kreiner) Hammitt, Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Nina Hammitt; and his sister and brother-in-law, Delores “Dode” (Willis “Red”) Hartley. He is survived by his beloved daughter, Cheryl Murphy; grandchildren, Sandi Murphy, Cat (Paula) Murphy, and Peggi Murphy; great grandchildren, McKenna Murphy, Raina Rotondo, Donavan Allen, Rachel (Chad) Gallegly, and Josh Sibley; great great grandson, Carson Gallegly; brother-in-law, Steve (Debby) Kreiner; special friends, Joanne Thompson, Joe and Donna Allen, Larry Murphy, Greg Sibley, and Marty Stillinger; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and neighbors. The family also wishes to extend their gratitude to Akron Summa Hospice outpatient doctors and caregivers.
Per Wayne’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no services will be held. The family suggests memorials to celebrate Wayne’s life and legacy of love and faith to the Mogadore Football Program, c/o Mogadore High School, 130 S.
