David Randolph Whetsell passed away on September 12, 2026, at the age of 88. 

The idea of home, the place we feel most comfortable, loved, and protected, had several profound meanings to Dave through the years. 

It all began in his hometown of Kingwood, West Virginia. One of his favorite stories to tell is how he was born the baby in a family of 14 children. That always got a reaction from people. In the beautiful country roads of West Virginia, his roots grew deep. Then, he moved to Mogadore, Ohio, where he lived in the same home, that he built with his lovely wife Larelle, for 59 blessed years. He raised his three children here and created even deeper roots in that small community. The bonds created here with family and neighbors were strong. So many memories, such good times. 

During this same time period, his church home was Arlington Memorial Baptist Church where he and his family worshipped and served for many long years. Dave and his wife made lasting impressions on the junior and senior high school students that they served in the youth program. Dave drove the church bus for many youth outings. That church family meant so much, and the friendships lasted his lifetime. 

After Larelle’s death, he moved in with his granddaughter and her young family. Though digging up his roots was difficult, he needed assistance. He soon reaped the benefits of multi-generational living and was part of a vibrant household. While he was in the hospital, all he could talk about was that he needed to get back home, to this home, where he felt most comfortable and loved. And now, because he believed in Jesus, he is in his eternal home in heaven, the best home ever! For Jesus said, “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.” John 11:25 

Dave proudly served in the Air Force from 1955 to 1960 and was stationed in Korea. He worked in retail his entire life and was an exceptional manager/salesman winning many awards. He enjoyed his days off golfing with his buddies. He is survived by his 3 children, 7 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren, all of which brought him much joy. He will be greatly missed. 

A military funeral service will be held at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Seville, Ohio, on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at 1:00 p.m.
