Herbert Daniel Smith

Herbert Daniel Smith, 87, went home to be with the Lord on February 27, 2012 after a long illness.

Born in Akron, he lived in the Kenmore and Green areas most of his life. Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was employed at the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and Goodyear Aerospace for 30 years. Dan was a longtime member of Greensburg United Methodist Church, where he was the head of the Building Committee for over 20 years.

Preceded in death by his wife, Helen; brothers, Gordon, James and Virgil; and sisters, Myrtle Mauldin and Donna Powell, he is survived by sons, Gregory (Donna) and Doug (Jane), both of Green; daughters, Debbie (Dale) Wilcox of Transfer, Pa. and Linda (Roy) Hageman of Depoe Bay, Ore.; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; brother, Ralph of Manchester; and sisters, Gertrude Dietrich and Gertha Roche of Sandusky, Ohio.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, 11 a.m., at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 3553 Northdale St., UNIONTOWN 44685, with the Rev. Dr. John E. Capper officiating.  Burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Akron, where military rites will be conducted by Firestone VFW Post 3383.  Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, and from 10 a.m. until the service time on Saturday.  Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 70 W. Streetsboro St., Suite 201, Hudson, OH 44236.
