Obituary

John S. Kerman, 75, passed away on September 10, 2026.

John Kerman had a gift for turning ordinary life into a story, and usually one worth retelling. He moved through life with curiosity, humor, strong opinions, and an appreciation for the simple things that made a good day a great one. He loved his family fiercely, enjoyed a good adventure, and could find something worth talking about just about anywhere.

John treasured time spent with those he loved, whether sharing stories, making memories on Portage Lakes, cheering on the Cleveland Guardians, or pursuing his goal of visiting as many Major League Baseball stadiums as possible. He never needed much of an excuse to enjoy himself, and some of his favorite moments came from the simplest plans, especially when good food, good company, or a little friendly debate were involved.

An enthusiastic home chef, John could often be found watching YouTube cooking videos, especially those featuring Italian cuisine, and then recounting every detail to anyone willing to listen, despite never seeming to remember the chef’s name or where to find the video again. He enjoyed competitive shooting with the Canton McKinley Rifle Club, woodworking, fishing, pontooning, and spending time with family and friends.

In recent years, John embarked on a quest that became legendary among those who knew him: finding the world’s greatest hot dog. Or at least one worthy of comparison to Hillbilly Hot Dogs in West Virginia. Whether from a roadside stand, a ballpark vendor, a county fair, or a local diner, he was always willing to try “just one more” in pursuit of perfection.

John was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 28 years, Nancy (Paulus) Kerman; his parents, George and Theodora (Navrozides) Kermanides; and his brother, George Kerman. He is survived by his children, Nicholas Kerman and his companion Maggie Herceg, Jennifer (Timothy) Effler, and Julie (Matthew) Claflin; his grandchildren, Athena Kerman, Paxton Kerman, Harper Claflin, and Brody Claflin; his “outlaws” Mary Ann (Richard) Betts, John (Deborah) Paulus, Edward (Rebecca) Paulus, Suzanna (William) Racine, and Timothy (Shannon) Paulus; and his longtime companion, Denise Dollinger.

John was deeply loved by his family and friends. His humor, generosity, and unmistakable way of finding joy in the everyday will be forever missed and lovingly remembered.
