Emblem

Kenneth Jewell Evans passed away suddenly on the morning of November 21, 2012, at St Edwards in Fairlawn. He was 87 years old and the last of seven sisters and one brother.

Born in Wheeling, West Virginia, he moved with his family at a young age to Akron. He attended Glover School and later, graduated from Howard Trade School as a machinist, an occupation he excelled at well into his 70s. Kenneth was a Navy veteran of World War II, where he served as a machinist on a mine sweeper in the Pacific from 1943 until discharged in 1946. He was very proud of his service to our country and displayed a photo of himself in his Navy uniform as a reminder. In 1949, Kenneth and his wife, Marie, moved to Ellet. As a machinist for over 50 years, Kenneth worked for General Tire, McNeil Corporation, and a number of other tool and die, and machine shops in the greater Akron area.

He appreciated contemporary music, particularly of the 1960s. He was his son, Scott’s, main ‘roadie’ transportation for Scott’s many high school rock bands. He was always a welcomed sight and appreciated for his unselfish participation and encouragement. He was giving of his time to both his sons and his grandson, Zack. Flea markets and “antiquing” were a favorite pastime, along with gardening around the house. In his 70s, he enjoyed working with stained glass and created many beautiful pieces for himself and his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Cecil; wife, Marie; seven sisters, Jeanette, Judy, Ruby, Vera, Nancy, Etta, Dolores; and one brother, Benny. He is survived by his two sons, Scott and Marvin; daughter-in-law, Mari-Lynn; grandson, Zack; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial service Sunday, 3 p.m., at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 547 Canton Rd., Akron, Ohio 44312, with Rev. Fleary Spurlock officiating.
