Girl Scouting was the passion of Sandra L. Berg-Plummer, who met her Creator on May 9, 2026, at age 85. She was best known as “Miss Sandy” to the hundreds of Girl Scouts she mentored over her lifetime. She embodied what it meant to be a Girl Scout, dedicating her life to helping young women stretch their minds, increase their confidence, become leaders, and open doors to new opportunities through Scouting. Sandra was well-respected in the Girl Scout community, and among friends and colleagues, for her generosity, encouragement, determination, creativity, resourcefulness and vision.
Sandra got involved in the Girl Scouts of America as soon as she was old enough! Troops 10 and 11 were already established at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in downtown Akron, where she was baptized as an infant and later confirmed her faith in Jesus Christ. She worked to become a First Class Scout, earning the coveted Curved Bar Award.
In 1961, at just 21 years of age, Sandra began leading the troops she grew up in -- Girl Scout Troops 10 and 11. Under her leadership, these troops represented the first racially integrated Girl Scout troops in Akron. In 2019, Girl Scout Troops 10 and 11 celebrated their 100-year partnership with Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, where Sandra was a lifetime member. She remained the registered leader of Troops 10 and 11 until 2022 – an astounding 75-year legacy!
Born December 30, 1940, Sandra was the only child of Alpha A. (Dreschler) and Bernard H. Berg of Davenport, Iowa. The couple moved to Akron for Mr. Berg to teach at Mason School and soon after, Sandra was born. A life-long resident of Akron, she graduated from Ellet High School. After graduation, she worked at First National Bank of Akron for two years to pay her tuition at Hammel Actual College, where she earned a top spot in the Executive Secretarial Training Program.
Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company quickly hired her as a full-time Executive Secretary at their Akron headquarters, where many managers depended on her skills until she retired with 45 years of service. Sandra was known for baking dozens of cookies each Christmas to share with the 13-member staff. She was also known as the Girl Scout Cookie source, as the Goodyear team purchased enough cookies to help her troops take top sales honors.
Sandra was engaged to be married to David H. Schultz when she was in her twenties, but their love story ended tragically when he died in a car accident before their wedding. Decades later, at age 44, God brought another David into Sandra’s life. David E. Plummer met Sandra while bringing his granddaughters to Girl Scouts at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, where Sandra was their leader! The couple was joyfully married May 18, 1985 and served together in Scouting, until Dave’s death on July 8, 1995. Sandra was also a decades-long veteran of the Akron Metropolitan Hiking Club, earning more hiking badges than could fit on her walking stick.
Sandra’s influence will resonate for generations, as the young women she passionately guided through Girl Scouts go on to guide other young women to new heights.
Memorial donations may be made in Sandra’s honor to Girl Scouts of NE Ohio (INFORMATION TO COME MONDAY).
Friends may pay their respects on Thursday, May 14th, from 3:00 – 4:00 pm at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 50 N. Prospect Street, Akron, OH 44304. Her memorial service will follow at 4:15 pm, including an honorary Flag Ceremony by local Girl Scouts. A private burial will take place at East Nimishillen Church Cemetery.
