Susan L. (Deputy Sue) Wigington passed away peacefully on 10/23/25. Preceded in death by the love of her life, husband, George Wigington, Susan is survived by her son and pride and joy, Justin Wigington, beloved stepdaughters Denise (Rich) Koleszar, Darlene (Mark) Hochstetler, grandchildren Nathan and Amber Hochstetler, cherished brother J. David (Shandra) Craig, nephew Parker (Elise) Craig, niece Shelby Craig and many dear friends.
A lifetime resident of Akron, OH, Susan grew up in Fairlawn and graduated from Copley High School in 1977. She was a three-sport letterman and excelled in volleyball, honored by being inducted into the Copley Athletic Hall of Fame.
Susan attended Mississippi State University where she lettered 4 years on the Volleyball team and proudly graduated in 1981 with a B.S degree. Go Dawgs! She spent her summers in Canada, on the Pickerel River, working for the Baker family at Kagamaga Lodge and Camp Wanikewin. She continued to frequently visit “the River” and had so many fond memories and special friends.
She joined the Summit County Sheriff's Department in 1982 as a “Special Deputy” and went to full time status in 1983. “Deputy Sue” proudly served for 28 years, 19 of those as a DARE Officer in schools throughout Summit County. Working another 10 years as a substitute teacher in the same schools, Susie positively impacted the lives of everyone who knew her.
Susan loved to travel, enjoyed fishing, kayaking, nearly any outdoor activity and Euchre. She was faithful in her beliefs and served as a Deacon at Oak Hill Presbyterian Church, was a founding member of the “Liar’s Club” and was passionate about family, friends, Canada and Mississippi State! Truly, one-of-a-kind, Susan will be deeply missed and never forgotten.
Family and friends will be received Friday, October 31st from 3 to 6pm at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 547 Canton Rd. Akron, OH 44312. Funeral service will be held Saturday, November 1st at 9am at Oak Hill Presbyterian Church, 2406 Ardwell Ave. Akron, OH 44312. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Summit County DARE Program. Checks are to be made out to the Summit County Sheriff's Office and sent to 53 University Ave. Akron, OH 44308, Attn: Jen Kline.
