Phyllis Hopkins Smith

August 25, 1926 - September 18, 2021

Phyllis Hopkins Smith, 95, passed away suddenly, unexpectedly, and peacefully on September 18, 2021 at Akron City Hospital following surgery to repair a femur-hip fracture. In addition to her parents, Otis and Gertrude (Fenstermaker) Hopkins; she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Delbert G. Smith in 2003. She is survived by her sons, Rollin (Charlene) Smith of Zellwood, FL; Merle Smith (Teresa Houston) of Canton, Roger Smith of Uniontown; daughter Claire (Jim) Walsh of Greenfield, MA; grandchildren Jason (Mary) Walsh, Cody Walsh, Ellie Walsh, Alex Smith (Genevieve Beller), Charlene V. Smith, Katherine Smith; great-grandchildren Ben and Ethan Walsh, and Moira Smith-Beller; her sister Dodie Hopkins Lawver; a host of nephews, nieces and cousins. Phyllis was a life resident of Ellet and Uniontown, where she partnered with her husband to establish in 1954 the wholesale greenhouse business Delbert Smith, Inc. A graduate of Ellet H.S. and the Flora Stone Mather College of Western Reserve University, she was a 50-year+ active member of First Congregational UCC in Rootstown, where she sang in the choir. She served many local organizations and civic endeavors, especially Lake Twp. Historical Society and Uniontown Community Park. She enjoyed playing percussion and marimba in several bands. Phyllis lived a long and active life devoted to her family and many friends who will miss her energy and enthusiasm. In her honor, please give flowers or plants to someone you love. Funeral service Friday, 11 a.m. at Hopkins Lawver, 3553 Northdale St. NW, Uniontown, with Rev. David Weyrick officiating. Burial at Woods Cemetery, Uniontown. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday, 5 to 8 p.m. or Friday, 10 to 11 a.m. At the family’s request, masking and social distancing will be maintained.
